Anticipated Starting Date: September 2019

In the context of the development of a new interdepartmental Biomedical Engineering Institute and in line with the key projects developed by its Solid Mechanics Laboratory, the Department of Mechanics at Ecole Polytechnique is invites applications for an assistant professor in the field of biomaterials.

The position is open at the assistant professor level, but senior applications will also be considered. Candidates interested in collaborating directly with physicians are especially encouraged to apply. Areas of interest include multiscale biological materials, organoid bioengineering, connective and cellular tissue engineering, or smart gels and polymers as encountered for example in the development of controlled drug release systems.

Candidates must hold a PhD and have a track record of excellent research and teaching. The selected candidate will be expected to teach courses in mechanics at different levels in the different curriculum offered by Ecole Polytechnique (Bachelor, Ingénieur Polytechnicien Program and Master), and to contribute to broadening the department’s course offer at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The candidate’s ability to contribute to project classes and strengthen the relationships between teaching, research and applications will be an important selection criterion.

The Biomedical Engineering Institute centralizes Ecole Polytechnique’s activities in this field. Institute faculty members are affiliated with various campus departments including Physics, Mechanics, Biology, and Applied Mathematics. The Institute has access to state-of-the-art experimental and computational facilities. In light of the highly interdisciplinary nature of the current search, the successful candidate may also have secondary affiliation with another campus department in addition to the primary affiliation with the Department of Mechanics. The successful candidate’s research appointment will be in Ecole Polytechnique’s Solid Mechanics Laboratory and he/she is expected to develop a vibrant externally funded research program and to teach both disciplinary and inter-disciplinary courses. Teaching may be in French or English, depending on the candidate’s preference. Collaborative synergies with other major campus thrusts in biomedical engineering are highly desirable.

In terms of responsibilities and duties, Assistant Professor positions at École Polytechnique are equivalent to the French academic positions of “Maître de Conférences”.

Interested candidates are invited to contact the Department Chair, Christophe Josserand, AbdulBarakat and Patrick LeTallec (head of LMS
